The pod is lightweight and if its largely alone will travel through the air draggy end first making it excellent for easy landings. The quickest and easiest method to get started is to make sure you are flying/re-entering at an angle (straight up or down is suicide!) and to use a decoupler to stage the command pod, its parachute and maybe a few experiments. Similarly slowing down can come as a shock, to tell the truth most of whats needed in KSP will be alien to newcomers!
